Behind the Eastern Gate is both legend and fact. As for its
relationship to Jesus Christ, the early Christians believed when the
Lord returns, He would enter Jerusalem through the eastern gate.
One Scripture the early Christians uses was Psalm 24:7,8, where it
says, "Lift up your heads, O gates, and be lifted up, O ancient
doors, that the king of glory may come in! Who is the King of glory?
The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle."
The orthodox Jews believe the Eastern Gate will be opened when
Messiah comes. The Moslem believe it stands on the threshold of
heaven and hell. But to keep the Jewish Messiah from coming
through that gate the Muslims have a cemetery there. (I've been to
the gate. The Eastern Gate was also known as the Golden Gate,
and faced directly in front of the great temple doors.]
The primary reference to the Eastern Gate that connects with God's
Messiah, Jesus Christ, is in Ezekiel 44:1-3; "Then He brought me
back by the way of the outer gate of the sanctuary, which faces the
east; and it was shut. The Lord said to me, 'This gate shall be shut;
it shall not be opened, and no one shall enter by it, for the Lord God
of Israel has entered by it [Jesus]; therefore it shall be shut." This
prophecy was partially fulfilled in 1517, when Suleiman, in his
rebuilding of the city of Jerusalem, order the Eastern Gate to be
sealed. [Jesus had entered through the Eastern Gate, and did much
of His teaching in that area.]
Hope this helps a bit.
