The Hebrew word for 'fast(ing)' is 'tsum.' It means to abstain from food. A
Biblical fast therefore, is an abstaining from food, and usually from drink
also.

When Jesus said, "But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fastng,"
the emphasis would be upon being prepared spiritually.
