David StellwagonWho Said What?

David Stellwagon

In 1 Kings Chapter 13, we read a very unusual story about a prophet from Judah. God sent him to Jeroboam, King of the Northern Kingdom of Israel, to speak against the idolatry he was committing. Jeroboam didn't want the people of his kingdom going down to the temple in Jerusalem for fear their hearts would turn to the king of Judah so he made some golden calves and caused Israel to worship these as their gods. The prophet found him in Bethel sacrificing on the idol altar and prophesied concerning the idolatry and what God was going to do.

After fulfilling his commission he started heading home when he was stopped by another prophet from Bethel. This prophet asked the first prophet to come to his house and have a meal. But the first prophet refused, having a special command from the Lord, saying, "...I cannot return with you, nor go with you, nor will I eat bread or drink water with you in this place. For a command came to me by the word of the LORD, 'You shall eat no bread, nor drink water there; do not return by going the way which you came.'" (1 Kings 13:16,17, NAS95) He had a command which he was to also fulfill. But the prophet from Bethel said, "...I also am a prophet like you, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the LORD, saying, 'Bring him back with you to your house, that he may eat bread and drink water.' But he lied to him." (1 Kings 13:18, NAS95)

Well, our prophet from Judah believed him and went back to the house and had a meal. No doubt, he was hungry and tired and was ready to jump at such good sounding words. But "...it came about, as they were sitting down at the table, that the word of the LORD came to the prophet who had brought him back; and he cried to the man of God who came from Judah, saying, 'Thus says the LORD, "Because you have disobeyed the command of the LORD, and have not observed the commandment which the LORD your God commanded you, but have returned and eaten bread and drunk water in the place of which He said to you, 'Eat no bread and drink no water'; your body shall not come to the grave of your fathers."'" (1 Kings 13:20-22, NAS95) And sure enough, he was killed by a lion on the way back to his home.

We can learn from the error of this prophet from Judah. We have scripture telling us God's will and He gives us special convictions about things in our lives. We must not be turned away from these instructions and truths just because a "Man of God" comes along and tells us differently. We are all individually responsible to God. We don't need a special man or angel instructing us of God's will for us. No matter how godly the person is that speaks to you of a new instruction from God for your life, if God has not shown to you that new instruction from His word then you must not change course from His original word to you.

God speaks to you and you follow Him. Stick to what He has commanded you. For "...Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour." (1 Peter 5:8, NAS95) We certainly don't want Satan destroying our lives because of our disobedience. So the next time someone tells you that God says such and such, but we know it is not according to the scriptures or His direction for us, we need to look them straight in the eye and say, "Who Said What?" And then walk right on along.

Alan B. StroudWill You Shut Up and Pray?

by Alan Stroud

"And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly." (Matt. 6:5-6 NKJV)

THE SHUT DOOR - Jesus is contrasting two kinds of prayer. Not just public & private prayer, but real & artificial prayer.

I love a nice, juicy red apple. I've also seen fruit displays that LOOKED tasty, but were decorated with wax fruit! No real substance, just a decoration!

The pretenders love to pray, to be seen by men. That's all they get - an impressed audience! They don't have much use for private prayer, because they have no audience.

The possessors, those who have a genuine, vital relationship with the Father, have a "shut door policy." Their "Keep Out" sign shuts out distractions, duties, other priorities, wandering thoughts, and the conspiracy of interruptions that steal our focus.

THE SECRET PLACE - This is the place that's too intimate, personal & real for anybody else! Our Father is there! He is our omnipotent audience of ONE!

This is where God deals with us & we deal with God. I wonder if this is where the greatest work is done IN US! This is the place that prepares us for public life.

We learn much about our God & ourselves in the secret place. Are we comfortable alone with Him - praying? How long has it been since our last "solo time?"

Those who pray often secretly develop a deep confidence & tenacious faith. We don't find them always praying "if it be Thy will," because they know His heart!

THE SEAL OF APPROVAL - The Father's reward; open joy! Jesus said to ask and receive that your joy may be full. What a joy to know that the only One who can really answer gives us His ear & heart! He responds to our prayer!

The Father's reward; answered prayer! One morning recently I was grieved for having missed a couple of opportunities to share Christ. I was grieved at my lack of openness & willingness to share. I went to my secret place & talked to my Father about it. Then I went about my "busy" day. That afternoon I went to the prison for afternoon ministry. I was well into my good "sermon" in Romans when an inmate I didn't know abruptly raised his hand. He said, "What does it mean to be born again?"

I led him to the Lord right there. OPEN REWARD! It's as if the Father said, "Here's an opportunity you can't miss." Nobody knew the whole story but Him & myself.

Friends, will we SHUT UP AND PRAY?
