JEC,
There are a great many good Bible translations. The best
translation is the one that you will read for yourself. All
translations work from basically the same early manuscripts. My
translation of preference is the New American Standard Bible. (You
can do some research on Bible translations by doing a web search on
that particular subject.)

There are a number of verses that lead us to the Scriptures as a
base support for our faith. However, we are cautioned not to become
'letter' Christians, but rather believers who can be led of the
Spirit. Paul said that the letter kills whereas the Spirit gives life.
As for having the Scriptures as a rule of faith, here are a couple of
considerations:
Paul said that in our walk with the Lord and our relationship with
Christian leaders, should never "exceed what is written." (Cf.
1Co4:6)
When the Lord opened the minds of the apostles, He took them
through the Scriptures. (Cf.
Luke 24:44-48) He said that "all things
that are written ... must be fulfilled."
