Ask The Pastor
February 2, 2001
Hi friend,
You asked:
> Is it wrong to divorce for reasons other than
adultry or
> fornication? Thank you.
It would help if I knew more about the reason for your question.
But, yes, there are other reasons Biblically for a divorce. For
example if a believer is married to an unbeliever, and the
unbeliever wishes to depart, that marriage can be revoked in the
sight of God. In this case the believer would be free to remarry,
but only to another believer. (Paul explains this.)
The Lord doesn't give us a right to divorce over whatever. But
sometimes a marriage gets out of control and divorce seems to be
the only alternative. There could be a threat of life involved, etc. In
this case very little can be done. Divorce may be the only option.
Then you have the case where a partner has been abandoned
by his or her mate. This can be cause for divorce. This would tie
into something that Paul said concerning a husband not
providing for his family. The Bible describes this person as
being worse than an unbeliever. If he is worse than an
unbeliever, then it seems divorce is the only alternative.
These are my opinions. I did not want to get too technical in this
area. Perhaps is you shared a little more, it would help me give
a better answer.
