Ask The Pastor
September 19, 2000
Dear Friend,
You asked:
> what is the meaning of Matthew 11 : 12
This Scripture says, "From the days of John the Baptist until
now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and violent men take it
by force." (NASB)
The 'suffers violence' can better be rendered 'forcefully
advancing.' The point being that since John the Baptist the
kingdom of heaven, which, by the way is a Jewish way of
saying, 'the rule of God,' is coming forth forcefully. The true King of
Israel and of the universe was then present in the nation of Israel.
The difficulty of this passage as to do with "violent men take it
by force." The thought may be 'now is the time for courageous
men to take hold of the things of God.' Interestingly enough this
thought may have its counterpart in the Old Testament writings.
For example, "violent men take it by force," may be a summary on
Daniel 11:32, where it says, "The people who know their God
will display strength and take action."
Hope this helps.
