Ask The Pastor

September 3, 2004

Tina,

I probably can't tell you anything that you don't already know. For one thing worldly music carries the spirit and message of the world. John said that if we love the world and the things of the world, the love of the Father is not in us. Secondly, it is important to understand that all of life revolves around where our heart is.

But I agree that this is a real problem for many parents. Let me make a couple of responses to some of what you said.

> my 12yr daughter has a friend who listens to worldly music and we

> told her she may not listen to it in our house, we don't want our

> daughter to listen to it but she does when she is away from us.

You are making the right stand. But you will need to reinforce the real problem so that your daughter will see what the Bible has to say about worldliness. This may become a springboard for bringing your daughter into a better relationship with the Lord. Keep in mind that Jesus said we are not of the world. Paul said that we are not to let the world mold us into its image. (I assume you are familiar with these Scripture referrals.)

> they want to know why we don't want them to listen to worldly music.

> my thought is if it does not edify God we shouldn't be listening to

> it. but some people who listen to R & B or oldies don't seem to

> think that this is bad and it is confussing to the kids.

This is a double-standard. No wonder some of the kids reach out for what the world is offering today. I agree it can be confusing. I've often said to our congregation that you can tell where a believer is in their consecration - simply get in their car and turn on the radio. What they listen to will tell you where they are spiritually. That's just the way it is.

> what can i tell them is the best reason for them not to listen to

> music that talks about worldly things. ex, sex drugs.

This is good, but you need to go further. Get your daughter to sit down with you and share from your heart. Explain to her what the spirit of the world really is. It is the spirit that crucified Jesus. You need to have some Scriptures at hand to help her. By doing it this way you give room for the Word of God to penetrate her heart. It may even end up with a moment of prayer with you and your daughter.

> i don't listen to worldly music so i don't feel bad not allowing my

> daughter to listen to it.

I also agree that your daughter is your child to raise. Continue to instill in her godly virtues and values. It will take root over time. Raising kids is hard work. They don't come with a manual. But as a believer you have the Holy Spirit to help in the matter.

> although when i was young i did listen to it.

Sure you did. You did what many young people do

> am i being mean for not allowing her to listen to what kids around

> her are listening to?

You are not wrong at all. To try to give your child true spiritual values is never wrong. But remember that the warfare isn't simply over music. The enemy is reaching out for your child. Thus you need to pray for wisdom and guidance.

> how can i tell a 13yr old who is into rap that it is bad for her to

> listen to, she goes to church but doesn't seem to get the whole

> christian way of living. thank you for any imput.

The reason she doesn't get the Christian way of living is because it is not yet in her heart. But be encouraged. Time is always on the side of truth. She will come around in time. May take a heart ache or two, but the Lord is not going to leave her to the world. I've often told our congregation that if they had not intended to be saved, they should never have called on the name of the Lord. The promise is, "And it shall come to pass what whoever shall call upon the name of the Lord will be saved."

Hope I've helped a bit.

Blessings,

Buddy
