Anonymous,
Some folk receive an instant deliverance from smoking, while
others need to draw on the Lord's strength until the battle is won.
As a young Christian I had a struggle with cigarettes. Thank God the
battle was won.
As for Paul's comments, I think you are referencing what he said
about immorality as a sin against the body. He wasn't saying that
fornication is the only sin that defiles the body. What he said was
that immorality is a sin against the body. (Cf.
1 Co 6:18)
But coming back to smoking, the problem is that smoking is a drug
addiction. It is in this sense that it defiles the body by introducing
harmful elements into the blood that can result in premature death.
The apostle said we are to cleanse ourselves from all defilement of
flesh and spirit. (Cf.
1 Co 7:1) The word 'defilement' in Greek speaks
of a pollution or filthiness.
The Lord bless you,
Buddy
