Bill,
Neither the Trinitarian doctrine nor oneness is what the early
Christians believed. These two doctrines came later. However,
there is truth in each of them.
The early believers came from a Jewish matrix. Their thinking was
entirely Hebraic. Not only were they Bible centered, but their sages
had well prepared them for the coming of Messiah. (Jesus) They
knew that somehow the Messiah would be deity revealed.
As to the Godhead, they very much believed that Jesus was (is)
the Son of God, and that He existed from the beginning. But they
saw this as a great mystery, that is, something to be understood with
the heart and not necessarily with the head. In all this they firmly
believed there could only be one true God, and that Jesus was
Himself the perfect manifestation of the God of Israel.
Something else that may help you is to subscribe to an educational
forum that our ministry sponsors. It is what is called an email
conference where members receive Bible studies, but are also
encouraged to participate in dialogue. It is a good place to ask
questions. A large part of our membership is from a oneness
background.
If interested you can subscribe at the following site (a questionnaire
will be sent):

Let me know if I can help you further.
The Lord bless you,
