Mr. Adams,
Perhaps the best way to view the issue of apostles is to understand that no
one since the original apostles has ever had the same authority that was given
to them. Once we accept that there are no apostles on the order of the original
apostles, then we can deal with the question of whether there are apostles
today.
Even this question is not without its difficulties. The reason is because of
the word apostle. The word apostle by itself simply speaks of someone who is
commissioned to speak for another person, such as an ambassador. It merely means
'a sent one.'
Are there sent ones today? I certainly would not call them apostles. But
there is a word that comes from the Greek word for apostle. It translates over
into Latin, and then into English. It is the word 'missionary.'
See the problem? Because the term apostle is generally thought of to refer to
the original apostles of Jesus, it eventually went into disuse. There are people
today who like to refer to themselves as apostles, but I would never look at
them in that way.
Hope this helps.
