Ask The Pastor

(2nd letter to Krystal)

Hi Krystal,

I can only assume that you have not been around pentecostal or charismatic churches. The practice of speaking in tongues is greatly emphasized by most charismatic and pentecostal groups today. While it is not my purpose to talk-down these groups, I would be amiss if I didn't suggest some caution.

Certainly I don't want to provide you with horror stories, but what you will hear in these groups today is far removed from what took place on the Day of Pentecost in 33 ad. The apostolic company were speaking in languages to be understood by the hearers. This is not what you will hear in pentecostal or charismatic churches today.

Have you ever seen the movie 'Cape Fear?' (Pardon the reference to this movie.) At the end of the movie when the bad guy is about to drown, he begins speaking in tongues. (His father was a pentecostal preacher.) What you hear this actor doing in the movie is very similar to what you will hear in pentecostal circles. Perhaps that will explain what you are likely to hear, especially in a pentecostal setting.

Keep in mind that speaking in tongues in the Bible was the speaking in languages to be understood by the hearers. That is something you will not hear in these churches.

Some of the confusion comes in is when pentecostals and/or charismatics attempt to explain their speaking in tongues by use of some teaching Paul did on what may be termed as a prayer language. But they yet try to work the Day of Pentecost phenomena into this doctrine.

Really can't add any more to this.

The Lord bless you.
